People respected that the internet/ad campaign was really clever and innovative marketing, but I don't think many people actually thought the tapes were real. I think the "people thought it was real" hype is overblown. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and it was an amazing experience. Now I want to watch it again for the hundredth time! I don’t think I slept that night either! Good times. I refused to go back to the car, so someone had to go turn it off and get my stuff.

I finally pulled into the driveway, slammed on the brakes, blasted the horn, and then just ran into the house. Somehow I found myself going the right way to the cottage. Cursing and trying not to wet myself, I did an insane 3-point turn in that ridiculously huge car (no doubt getting scratched by tree branches) and floored it out of there. They all turned at once and looked at me. In front of me was a campfire with several people sitting around it.

I had a cell, but there was no service up there back then. By now I was scared AF thinking about being murdered by the Blair Witch. I drove down the wrong path and came out into a clearing. I would have made it before dark, but when I got to within a couple of kilometres, where the road became basically a dirt track through the woods, I got lost. It was my first time driving myself there, and I was alone. The next day, I had to drive my step-grandmother’s boat of a car up to our cottage. I saw it in a packed theatre, and it was terrifying and amazing.

It’s both a great movie and embarrassing nostalgia for me. So this begs the question, am I seeing The Blair Witch Project with rose tinted goggles? Or is that film the only good found-footage film to date?

I also hate the cheap jump scares they rely on and the incessant abuse of the "camera glitch" effect, that trend needs to die quicker than the coronavirus. Most of the actors deliver their lines like they are reading the script, it doesn't come out as organic and natural as the blair witch project trio did it in 1999. and some while not terrible, they just feel hollywoody, corny and fake. I have seen Cloverfield, the paranormal movies, Rec, Exists, Hell House LCC. I had hoped the future would bring more found-footage films for me to enjoy but so far that hasn't happened yet. It was the first "found footage" film I saw, I can almost feel like I am watching something that really happened, the acting is so realistic and the editing is so well executed. I remember watching that film when it came out and it spooked me hard, years of occasional rewatches cemented that film as one of my top favorite horror movies.
